British Science Week 2025 is all about “Change and Adapt,” encouraging students to explore how the world around them evolves—from animals and plants to technology and even human societies. But as teachers, we know that time is limited, and planning big science lessons can be a challenge.
That’s why we’ve put together five quick, engaging, and easy-to-set-up activities that will get your students thinking, experimenting, and having fun — without loads of prep work!
1. Camouflage Challenge (KS1 & KS2)
What You Need: Colouring pencils, paper, and small objects (e.g., buttons, paper clips).
What to Do:
Ask students to colour in a piece of paper to blend with their classroom environment.
Place a small object on the paper and see if it’s easy to spot.
Discuss how animals change and adapt their colours to survive.
🔎 Science Link: Natural selection and animal adaptations.
2. The Evolution of Technology Timeline (KS2)
What You Need: Printouts or digital images of old and new technology (e.g., phones, cars, computers).
What to Do:
Students arrange the images in order from oldest to newest.
Discuss how technology has changed and adapted over time.
Bonus: Predict what these items might look like 100 years from now!
🔎 Science Link: Inventions, engineering, and human adaptation.
3. Instant Ice Experiment (KS2)
What You Need: A bottle of water (left in the freezer for about 2 hours but not frozen solid) and a bowl.
What to Do:
Gently remove the water bottle and slowly pour the liquid over an ice cube in the bowl.
Watch as the water instantly turns to ice!
Discuss how water changes states and how this helps animals adapt to cold environments.
🔎 Science Link: States of matter and environmental adaptation.
4. Adaptation Scavenger Hunt (KS1 & KS2)
What You Need: A list of adaptations (e.g., “Find something waterproof,” “Find something that changes shape,” “Find something with a pattern for protection”).
What to Do:
Students hunt around the classroom or playground to find examples of objects that match the descriptions.
Discuss how these adaptations help animals, plants, or even everyday materials.
🔎 Science Link: Animal and plant adaptations, material properties.
5. The Science of Superheroes (KS2)
What You Need: A list of superheroes and their powers.
What to Do:
Discuss how some superheroes have adaptations similar to real animals (e.g., Spider-Man and real spiders, Wolverine and regeneration).
Challenge students to design their own scientific superhero with a power based on a real adaptation.
🔎 Science Link: Evolution, human adaptation, and biomimicry.
